Increased school safety, security starting in West Carrollton

West Carrollton schools will be increasing safety and security at its buildings this year.

All buildings will be locked, requiring visitors to be “buzzed in” and report to the main office, according to Andrea Townsend, West Carrollton City Schools superintendent.

In addition, staff will participate in ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate, Townsend), an active shooter civilian response training. The district has five certified ALICE trainers, according to Townsend.

A third school safety measure includes the hiring of a school resource officer at West Carrollton High School. The board of education will be paying for the wages and benefits of the officer, excluding worker’s compensation coverage, according to West Carrollton Police Chief Doug Woodard.

The district – which includes parts of Miami Twp. and Moraine – will begin the school year on Tuesday as classes resume at Schnell Elementary School. The other schools in the district will begin classes Aug. 28.
