Xenia tornado of 1974: Interactive map shows tornado outbreak

In April of 1974, a swath of tornadoes hit the region that caused more than $100 million in damages in Ohio alone, including a famous tornado in Xenia.

These tornadoes were part of a larger system called a Super Outbreak, multiple tornadoes that are spawned within the same system. Typical outbreaks are six to 10 tornadoes.

The 1974 outbreak was the second-largest on record in a 24-hour period with 148 tornadoes that hit 13 states and caused more than $600 million in damages, according to the National Weather Service.
