FOOD NEWS: New restaurant at The Greene to open April 23

The restaurant coming to one of The Greene Town Center’s newest and most prominent tenant spaces has set its opening date.

A spokeswoman for Fuzzy's Taco Shop said today that the opening date for the chain's first Dayton-area location has been set for April 23. Expect to see activity at the restaurant in the days preceding the official opening as Fuzzy's Taco Shop hosts some soft-open special events, but the restaurant will open to the public April 23, Linda Veatch, vice president of marketing for Fuzzy's Taco Shop, told this news outlet.

“We are truly excited to have them join our lineup, especially in such a prominent position front and center at The Greene,” Steve Willshaw, general manager of The Greene, told this news outlet.

Details of grand-opening offers are still being finalized. The 3,871-square-foot restaurant will employ about 35.

Fuzzy’s Taco will be located in a relatively new building that faces Indian Ripple Road at The Greene’s main entrance. It’s home to a Mattress Firm store, and was originally going to house the Dayton area’s first World of Beer pub until World of Beer pulled out of the deal in the summer of 2016.

Founded in 2003, Fort Worth, Texas-based Fuzzy’s Taco Shop serves authentic Mexican dishes such as Baja-style tacos, white queso, and jumbo burritos in addition to frozen margaritas and beer. The chain operates more than 120 locations across the country, including one in Toledo and one on North High Street in Columbus’ Arena District. And a Cincinnati location at 165 West McMillan St. is listed as “coming soon” on the chain’s web site.

Veatch has said the restaurant chain's officials chose Dayton for a new corporate-owned restaurant "for several reasons, including overall market health,(and) restaurant industry-specific successes … . The city also seems to have a great energy that aligns really well with our growing, fast-casual brand."

Fuzzy's has tripled its franchise restaurant openings since February 2016, when Atlanta-based NRD Capital acquired a majority stake in the company, according to Nation's Restaurant News.

“Fuzzy’s Taco Shop is a consumer favorite nationwide, making it a valuable addition to our already vibrant roster of retailers and eateries that have made The Greene Town Center a market leading destination for the entire Dayton region,” Olshan Properties’ head of retail, Ken Marshall, said last year in a release. “Our loyal guests already love to shop and dine at The Greene, but the addition of Fuzzy’s Taco Shop will give them another fantastic dining option to choose from starting this fall.”
