Springboro schools reaches tentative contract agreement with teachers and staff

Springboro school officials and representatives from the local teachers and certified staff unions have reached tentative contract agreements, according to the district communications coordinator.

“A tentative agreement was reached (Tuesday) night between Springboro Schools and the teachers’ and staff unions. This tentative agreement will be voted upon by the unions next week, at which time a special board meeting notice will be announced for the Springboro Schools’ Board of Education to vote upon,” Springboro Community City Schools Communications Coordinator Scott Marshall said in an email.

The most recent three-year contract expired on June 30.

Late Tuesday, the school board canceled a special meeting called earlier in the day for 8 a.m. Wednesday concerning negotiations with the district’s teachers and staff.

The agreement comes after indications the two sides were unable to reach an agreement and a strike was looming.

Last week, board member Lisa Babb said part of her reason for not voting for a new three-year contract with Superintendent Dan Schroer was the lack of notice she was given of the district and teachers going to mediation.

“The unions have been given permission by their members to give a 10-day strike notice required if they feel that’s the only option to an agreement is a strike,” Babb said in a statement she read at the July 17 board meeting.

It was unclear if the strike notice had been made.

“The only substantive update that we received was provided to us by Mr. Schroer less than 24 hours before negotiations went to federal mediation,” Babb added at the July 17 meeting.

Union representatives could not be reached.

Next week, the board was expected to meet to approve the contracts, provided the tentative agreements are adopted by local teachers and certified staff.
