Sens. Brown, Portman back Matt McFarland for Dayton federal judge seat

Sens. Rob Portman and Sherrod Brown both endorsed the nomination of Ohio appeals court Judge Matt McFarland as a federal district judge in Dayton.

President Donald Trump tapped McFarland, a graduate of the law school at Capital University and a judge on the Ohio Fourth District Court of Appeals, to fill a vacancy in the federal bench left by the retirement of Judge Thomas Rose. He will need Senate confirmation.

Brown, D-Ohio, and Portman, R-Ohio, recommended McFarland to the federal bench. Portman said McFarland’s “reputation is well deserved and I am confident he will continue to distinguished service on the bench.”

McFarland was elected to the court of appeals in 2004. He was re-elected in 2010 and 2016.

Gov. Kasich thinking about job in media, what’s next

Departing Ohio Gov. John Kasich seemingly wants it both ways. Action on the so-called “heartbeat” abortion ban bill stalled again in the Ohio Senate but may come as soon as today. The Senate Health Committee is expected to reconvene to consider amendments to House Bill 258, which would prohibit abortions once a fetal heartbeat can be detected — sometimes as early as six weeks before women know...

U.S. Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, is accepting applications for internship opportunities in his Washington, D.C. and state offices. Portman said he began his career in public service as a congressional intern and knows the benefits of offering college students an “exciting introduction to Congress and the workings of a Senate office,” said...

What do you think of Ohio making it harder to put issues on the ballot?

If you’re an elitist, Ohio House Joint Resolution 19 should be your cup of tea. HJR 19, backed by the Ohio General Assembly’s Republican leaders, would make it harder for rank-and-file Ohioans to amend the state constitution. The way things are now, Ohio voters may propose an amendment to the state constitution by gathering signatures on...
