Warren County might raise license fees $5 for road projects

Warren County is weighing whether to tack another $5 onto license plate fees to fund road projects.

The fee is projected to raise $1.1 million through fees on estimated 220,000 vehicles registered in the fast-growing county, Warren County Engineer Neil Tunison said today.

Public hearings are to be held on June 12 and June 19 before the commissioners are expected to vote to add the fee, effective Jan. 1, 2019.

Revenue from the existing fee, increased in phases since 1968, is shared with other local governments. The new fee was authorized by Ohio lawmakers in 2017, Tunison said.

“This would be the only one that goes 100 percent to the county,” he added.

With Commissioner Shannon Jones absent, Commissioner Tom Grossmann ultimately relented and approved setting the public hearings to leave Tunison enough time to complete the process before a June 30 deadline.

Grossmann wanted a memorandum breaking down the fees before approving the public hearings.

Noting the approaching deadline, Commissioner Dave Young urged to approve the public hearings and learn of the details on the current fees in the days leading up to the hearings or during the hearings.
