Event targets jobs, services for local veterans

Veterans can look for a job and find out about resources available to them at the third annual Veterans Moving Forward gathering on Wednesday at Wright State University.

Dozens of employers will be at the event’s first job fair, said Cassie Barlow, chairwoman of the Greater Miami Valley myVeterans Community.

The resource fair will connect veterans to available services, veterans service organizations and open the opportunity to network with veterans, she said.

“It’s grown every year,” she said.

As part of the outreach at the event, a new partnership will be announced between the Miami Valley Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, Wright-Patterson Medical Center, and the Dayton VA Medical Center, Barlow said. Research has shown a link between traumatic brain injury, and post-traumatic stress disorder to Alzheimer’s, she said.

“We’re hoping to kind of write the playbook for other cities around the country to better serve their veterans,” she said.

The Dayton region was one of 50 chosen across the country to launch a “myVeterans community” in late 2015. The area has a burgeoning population of 200,000 prior service members in a 16-county region.

In surveying veterans, “by far the biggest need was for information and for resources,” Barlow said.

“Veterans felt like they just didn’t know where to go to get all the information and services available to them,” she said.

The event is set 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at WSU’s Student Union.

Dayton RTA and Greene CATS Public Transit will provide transportation to and from the event with documentation of military service, organizers said.
