Local school attorney: Raid of superintendent’s home ‘out of nowhere’

An attorney for local charter school Watkins Academy said the school board had no warning the superintendent’s home would be raided Wednesday as part of a theft investigation.

“It came out of nowhere,” said Edmumd Brown, the school’s attorney.

He said the board is planning to schedule an emergency meeting to discuss the allegations listed in the search warrant affidavit.

He said the board was waiting on the results of a long-delayed state audit of the school’s finances, but didn’t know it had led to a criminal probe.

Watkins Academy is a K-8 school located at 4401 Dayton-Liberty Road. The school currently has 106 students, according to state records, and is budgeted to receive $821,182 this year.

The school’s website lists its board members as Miracle Monette, Earl Thompson, Angeline Washington, and Krista Dean.
