Beavercreek dad honored after Riverside shooting; suspect held in S.C.

The victim in a fatal shooting in Riverside earlier this month is remembered as a loving father and family man, and while the suspect is being held in South Carolina, authorities are working to indict him and bring him back to Ohio.

Robert Lee Caldwell, 35, of Beavercreek, was shot Aug. 15 in Riverside in front of his three sons.

The suspect, Sterling Roberts, 34, was arrested Aug. 19 in Spartanburg, South Carolina. He remains there as investigators work with the prosecutor’s office to bring formal charges against him in Caldwell’s death.

“This is the most important investigation we have going on right now,” said Riverside Maj. Colon Adams. “Since he’s being held there, it’s helped us gather more information. He’s off the streets. That’s the most important thing.”

Roberts is facing charges in South Carolina stemming from an incident in which he allegedly shot at a law enforcement officer. This happened after Riverside police issued a warrant for his arrest and named him as a suspect in Caldwell’s death.

Meanwhile, Caldwell was remembered at a private service held by his family, according to a Dayton Daily News obituary. A coroner’s office employee said the arrangements were handled by Tobias Funeral Home. The home declined to provide details when contacted after the death.

Caldwell is survived by five children and his wife Candace Caldwell, according to the obituary.

“Robert was a very accomplished stone mason and was employed by Two Brothers Paving,” the obituary stated. “He enjoyed working out daily and staying in shape. Above all, he was a loving husband, father, son and brother who was always there for his family. He will forever be remembered and missed by all who knew him.”

Memorial contributions may be made to the Robert Caldwell Family Fund through Wright-Patt Credit Union, according to the obituary.
