Boxes of brand-new merchandise thrown away behind Clayton Dollar General

Stacks of brand-new merchandise were thrown away behind a Clayton Dollar General located at 8126 N. Main St.

The boxes included brand-new shoes and clothes with tags still on them.

One woman was so upset to see boxes in the trash several times a week, she called News Center 7's Kate Bartley to figure out why it was happening.

“It just, my heart sank because there are a lot of people in our community who need stuff,” said the woman who lives in an apartment complex near the store. She asked not to be identified.

The woman and her husband spotted the boxes late one night and decided to come back in the morning to salvage and donate what they could.

“When we got up the next morning, all the stuff was dumped out of the boxes and trash was put on top of it and that just really bugged me. It’s sinful,” she said.

The woman said this isn’t the first time she’s found items that she says should have been donated. She’s also found laundry detergent, cleaning supplies, and cases of expired beer just sitting in front of the dumpster.

“They throw away dog food that’s not even outdated. I mean, they could take that to the shelter,” she said.

News Center 7's Kate Bartley reached out to corporate Dollar General about the issues and they said, "Those items were mistakenly placed in the dumpster by one of our store employees. It is not our policy to throw away new items. Our store teams are working with employees and store leadership to ensure our policies are clearly communicated and implemented."
