Changing Fifth and Jefferson: From the old Globe Theater to Gilly’s Jazz

The Globe Theater, located near the northeast corner of Fifth and Jefferson streets in Dayton, was a spot popular in Dayton for decades.

The theater opened in 1910, according to the website Dayton History Books Online, and was a popular hangout for kids in the 1940s and 1950s.

Entrance to the theater, just north of the intersection, cost a nickel between 1910 and 1916.

The name of the theater changed over the years from Globe to New Globe then Ohio, and in 1962 it became the Ohio Follies and played adult films.

The theater closed in 1969, and a Greyhound bus terminal took over the site.

Today, another popular entertainment venue is in the approximate location at the corner within the City of Dayton Transportation Center. Gilly’s Jazz, an iconic downtown music venue, has operated at the intersection since 1972.
