Sgt. Frank Simmons, assistant commander of the Dayton Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, said Littleton was heading back to his jurisdiction on an emergency call, possibly for a burglary. He was travelling west on West Third Street and had a red light when he activated his overhead lights but struck a BMW headed south at the intersection with Edwin C. Moses Boulevard.

Littleton and the driver of the BMW, who suffered broken bones, were taken to Miami Valley Hospital. No further information about the other driver was available.

Simmons said the investigation is preliminary, and that he didn’t know the chief’s speed at the time of the crash, nor whether the chief had also activated his cruiser’s siren in conjunction with the overhead lights as he approached the intersection.

According to police scanner traffic, the chief had just “pink slipped” someone suffering a mental health issue into Miami Valley Hospital and was responding to a dispatch requesting assistance for a burglary in Trotwood.

Littleton was just named interim chief for Perry Twp. at an Oct. 19 trustees meeting. He started his law enforcement career in 2010 in Perry Twp., where he spent three years before moving on to other agencies. He was most recently a K-9 handler for the Mowrystown Police Department in Highland County.
