Former music director convicted on child sex charges back in jail

A former Beavercreek church music director convicted of child sex crimes last year was indicted Friday on a new charge of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, according to court records.

John Riley Slate, 49, of Centerville, was arrested on a parole violation in May, according to public records. During a scheduled meeting, Slate’s probation officer asked to examine his phone, and while he was holding it a text came from a teen girl, according to Miamisburg Municipal Court documents.

Slate was convicted in September 2017 on charges of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor and pandering obscenity involving a minor, court records show.

Slate is accused of having a sexual relationship for the last two years with a West Carrollton girl. It started in December 2016 when the girl was 14, according to court records.

Slate is the former music director at St. Andrew United Methodist Church on North Fairfield Road in Beavercreek.

Prosecutors said the victim in Slate’s 2017 case met while he was a church music director. The girl in the second case is known to the first victim, but it is not clear how Slate met her.

Slate remains held without bond in the Montgomery County Jail.
