Free tax preparation services to be offered around Miami Valley area

Many people will soon receive free help for tax season through an assistance program.

City Hall was full of elected officials, bank representatives and volunteers Friday to remind local families about the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program, which operates free tax preparation services through April.

Verletta Jackson of Dayton’s Planning and Community Development says several thousands of people qualify for the program.

“If you make less than $54,000 a year, our program is set just for you,” she said.

Beginning Jan. 22, more than a dozen locations around the Miami Valley will offer this free program.

“What we want to do is make sure that our residents are getting back as much as they can. Whether it’s through the child tax credit or earned income tax credit,” said Jackson.

Last year, nearly 120 volunteers helped families file their taxes through this program.

This is the 15th year for the program and Jackson says she hopes residents can use it for many years to come.
