Hundreds gather to show support for injured Coldwater JV football player

A student's tweet about an injured compadre at Coldwater High School went viral and led to a mass showing of support and affection Monday night.

A gathering of more than 200 that include Coldwater Cavalier football players, family, students, faculty, friends and representatives from at least 10 other Midwest Athletic Conference schools (plus Celina and St. Marys) formed a human shield of sorts at Cavaliers stadium featuring the uniform number of the junior varsity player, Shane Homan, who suffered a spinal injury this past weekend.

The tweet from @JakeWenning10 that ignited Monday night's expression of love and support was #ShaneStrong.

Saturday morning, during Coldwater's JV game against Delphos St. John, Shane suffered a fracture of one of his vertebrae, which left him unable to move or feel his legs.

He was taken to Miami Valley Hospital by CareFlight and surgery was performed to fuse his four of his vertebrae.

Feeling has returned to his legs, according to his parents and his football coach.

Shane will have to learn to walk again. Therapy is scheduled to begin in a few days.

Monday night, while his parents were with him at the hospital, Coldwater's varsity football coach used FaceTime to show Shane the message of support the gathering sent his way.
