Greatest Generation: He waited, surrounded by smoke, for an attack that never came

Injured Wright State basketball player thanks supporters

For the first time since returning home Wednesday night from rehab in Colorado, we’re hearing from Wright State basketball player Ryan Custer.

He spoke to a crowd during a prayer service Sunday afternoon at Elder High School, his alma mater in Cincinnati, to thank them for their support.

Custer continues to recover from a traumatic spinal injury he suffered in April. He broke his C-5 vertebra on someone’s knee while jumping into a shallow, makeshift pool during an off-campus party in Oxford, home of Miami University.

His brother, Nick Custer, said the support over the last several months has been phenomenal.

“It just shows you what kind of special kid Ryan is,” he said. “He is a 19-year-old kid and he’s getting this overwhelming support. ... he’s humbled by all the work and prayers.”

Family members said Custer will continue his rehabilitation at home in Cincinnati.
