Northmont wins state again, seeks national title next

Northmont’s Academic Team won another National History Bowl State Championship and will head to Washington, D.C., at the end of April.

The National History Bowl asks questions related to all aspects of social studies, including history, geography, economics and social sciences, like psychology and sociology.

This is the team’s fourth History Bowl State Championship in eight years and the 12th overall. The team travels to the Nation’s Capitol at the end of April to compete in the National Championship. Northmont has won the national title twice in the past.

“One fun aspect for the students is that most of the material covered in Academic Challenge is not taught in school curriculums, so students have to study on their own to learn a lot of new material in subjects that they are interested in,” said David Jones, leader of the team.

The team this season is made up of freshmen: Sean Scranton, Samantha Street, Zach Weeks and Amara Nwanoro.

Individual competition also takes place. Sean Scranton defeated 24 students in the National History Bee and came in 5th.

Since Jones took over as coach, the team has won 10 consecutive seasons in the GWOC, eight times regionally, and seven state championships in all subject competitions.
