Investigators said the car traveling north on South Broadway Street ran a red light and crashed into an SUV.

The driver of the car was trapped inside the vehicle, but was freed from the wreckage by fire crews.

Both drivers were transported to an area hospital with injuries that are believed to be non-life threatening.

At least two children inside the car were not injured in the crash, police said.

“This is the heavy driving season, but no matter the season, we need people to slow down,” Dayton police Sgt. Creigee S. Coleman said.

“We need people to stop at these red lights so everyone can have a safe driving experience.”

The crash comes as Dayton police’s use of red light cameras has been scrutinized by community members.

Last week, the Dayton Unit of the NAACP filed a petition that would put the use of red light and speed cameras in Dayton on the November ballot if the appropriate number of signatures are obtained.

The intersection of Germantown and South Broadway streets is not one of the intersections currently with a red light camera.
