Newborn baby dies after mother finds him not breathing in Dayton

UPDATE @ 6 p.m.

A 23-day-old baby boy died Thursday morning after his mother reported she awoke to find her son not breathing.

The infant was identified as Zy’aire Britton of Dayton by the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office. He was taken by medics to Dayton Children’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly before 9 a.m.

A woman who identified herself as the baby's mother called 911 around 8:20 a.m., but then another woman got on the call. The second woman said when the mother woke up she found her baby next to her not breathing and with blood coming from his nose.

The baby’s cause and manner of death is pending, according to the coroner’s office.

Detectives and police are conducting an investigation at a Dayton home after a child was hospitalized, according to officers and initial reports.

Police and medics responded to reports of an unresponsive child at a home in the 3100 block of Nicholas Road in Dayton around 8:20 a.m. Thursday. Scanner traffic indicated the child was not breathing.

The child was transported to Dayton Children’s Hospital, but their condition was unknown.

Police have not provided an update on their investigation and it is unknown if any arrests or charges are pending.
