Roofing material ignites, sends smoke billowing from downtown Dayton building

UPDATE @ 3:25 p.m.: 

A building under construction in downtown Dayton sustained damage after roofing materials caught fire on the roof of the building, according to firefighters.

Firefighters were dispatched around 1:30 p.m. Thursday near the intersection of East Third and North St Clair streets after black smoke was reported coming from the roof.

“Upon investigation we found that workers on the roof were re-roofing the building and a flammable liquid came into contact with roofing material,” Dayton Fire District Chief Mike Fasnacht said.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze using a minimal amount of water, Fasnacht said.

The roof of the building sustained a small amount of damage but the blaze did not spread to other parts of the structure.

No one was inside the building when the fire broke out, officials said.

No workers or firefighters were injured.

UPDATE @ 2:45 p.m.:

Firefighters continue to block East Third Street near North St. Clair Street in Dayton after a fire broke out on the roof of a building.

Crews quickly contained the blaze, but black smoke was seen rising from the building.

There have been no reports of injuries.

UPDATE @ 1:55 p.m.:

A tattoo artist working in a building near the fire warned nearby tenants and called 9-1-1 to report the fire.

“I saw a ball of black smoke on top of the building, and saw some flames, so I ran over to the guy at Skeleton Dust Records and told him to get out and called 911," said Jordan Adams. He was curious what could have caused the fire in the vacant building, but he said he has seen construction work taking place.

UPDATE @ 1:40 p.m.: 

Fire crews have contained a fire that broke out on the roof of a downtown Dayton building across from the Dayton Metro Library.

Black smoke was visible from the roof by our crew on the scene. Initial reports indicate there were workers on the roof near the fire’s origin.

No injuries have been reported.
