Springboro food pantry finds new home

The pantry will move into space shared by Miami Valley Hospital and the Springboro school district.

The Springboro Community Assistance Center has found a new home.

The community food pantry and emergency assistance center is to move, as soon as Dec. 1, into space in a building, shared by the district and Miami Valley Hospital. The space is located on the school-district campus off Ohio 741 (Main Street in Springboro).

“The district is really pleased to see that this worked out the way it did to keep this community resource at a location that is so convenient and central to the community,” said Karen DeRosa, communications coordinator for the district.

The center was among tenants to lose their space due to plans to demolish the former Jonathan Wright School.

The Springboro school board approved a five-year sublease between the center and Miami Valley Hospital on Friday. It provides a new home for the center, founded and still managed by Wendy Ford, crisis intervention coordinator for the Springboro Community City Schools.

“Miami Valley Hospital is pleased to offer to you the following terms and conditions to lease vacant, unfinished space in the Educare Medical Office Building,” Emile “Buddy LaChance Jr. said in an Oct. 6 letter to Ford.

The lease provides for the center to move into 5,833 square feet of the building - also housing workout and other school facilities - on Dec. 1 for $100 a year during the first year and $150 a year in ensuing years.

The center is also expected to get liability insurance covering at least $1 million per occurrence and annual coverage of at least $2 million.

Miami Valley is paying off a loan financing the building secured by the school district. The district has been paying down the loan since 2008 with payments from the hospital.

Miami Valley is to pay for installation of building systems, such as air conditioning and heating, in the space.

Although Miami Valley has staffed medical offices on the upper two floors, there are currently none in the building.

The center is to be located in unfinished space on the third, or top, floor of the building. Also on the third floor is an internal entrance to the press box for adjoining CareFlight Field.

On the ground floor, the district has football training facilities, including work-out equipment, offices, locker rooms and meeting rooms.

Although not a district program, the center was founded by Ford and housed in Clearcreek Elementary School before moving into the former Wright school.

The board voted 3-0 to approve the sublease during a 7:30 a.m. meeting Friday. Board members Charles Anderson, Ron Malone and Dave Stuckey voted to approve the lease, while Jim Rigano and David Petroni were absent.
