An I-70 travel headache is over with the opening of a new bridge

As of early Friday evening, the Arlington Bridge over Interstate 70 in Brookville opened to drivers after months of closure.

The $5.3 million project — paid for by the Ohio Department of Transportation — closed the bridge on March 5 for reconstruction.

“The city feels like it is a game changer, a gateway of our community,” said Brokville city manager Gary Burkholder, who received the call on Friday.

Brumbaugh Construction was awarded the contract. The bridge was upgraded from two to three lanes. To date, the city has contributed $215,000 in matching funds to upgrade lighting and piers at the corners of the bridge.

“I am just glad it’s open! I can get home so much quicker,” said Brookville resident Kaelie Copley. “It’s gorgeous though and definitely an awesome facelift for that part of the city!”

Brookville received a Transportation Alternative Grant for $320,000 through the Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission that covers 70 percent of the lighting costs.

“It’s very pretty, they definitely needed to fix it up,” said Brookville resident Peyton Hemmerich.

The lighting, painting, and steel I-beams are still being worked on. The full completion of the bridge is slated to be Sept. 30.

“Still take caution for finishing touches. Be aware,” Burkholder said.
