Turner: ‘Community is very lucky that serious injury did not occur on the base’

Local lawmakers are reacting to a report put out by Wright-Patterson Air Force Base today saying a “poorly planned and executed” base exercise led to the chaos on base Aug. 2.

Here’s what they had to say:

Congressman Mike Turner, R-Dayton

“I want to congratulate Commander Thomas Sherman of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base on his leadership on what was clearly a thorough investigation into the active shooter incident in August. As we expected, this investigation resulted in a number of recommendations that need to be implemented on the base. As this report shows, our community is very lucky that serious injury did not occur on the base that day. I look forward to continuing to work with the base and assist as needed as they implement these new changes to improve safety.”

Senator Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio

“I think the findings in the report illustrate the need for additional coordination and communication. I’m glad they followed up with this report. I’m glad they take the situation seriously. It shouldn’t have happened that way, but I think that Wright-Patt is smart enough and resourceful enough to take some of these recommendations. My office will help them in any way we can.”
