A Monroe father of five children thought he was going to be a father of four.

Chuck Hedges, 82, was being interviewed recently about his stroke and the meaning of Father’s Day when he said 46 years ago, he and his wife, Phyllis, learned she was pregnant for the fourth time.

They already had two daughters, Lori and Karen, and a son, Chuck Jr.

So they cleaned out one bedroom in their North College Hill home — where they lived at the time — to make room for their fourth child. Bought one crib, one chest of drawers, one changing table

As Hedges waited for the birth of his child, a nurse walked into the waiting room and said: “Mr. Hedges, Do you want to see your twins?”

He was floored, he said.

This was before ultrasounds, and Phyllis said the way the twins were positioned, doctors thought they heard one heartbeat that was synced with hers.

Then Kevin and Carole were born.

“It was a very, very blessed thing,” Hedges said. “God knows. We don’t know.”

The couple has been married for 62 years and now have 17 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
