John Kasich: The tragic death of his parents

While Kasich worked the halls of power in Washington, tragedy struck in his family.

On Aug. 20, 1987, a drunken driver, Greg Kuszajewski, crashed into an Oldsmobile driven by John and Anne Kasich in McKees Rocks. Kasich’s parents had stopped at a Burger King for a cup of coffee and were struck as they pulled out.

"I don't think they ever saw him coming," Kasich wrote in his third book, Every Other Monday.

His father died at the scene; his mother died the following day. According to media reports at the time, Kuszajewski pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide and was sentenced to three years in prison.

The tragedy profoundly impacted John Kasich.

The lapsed Catholic turned to God and started regularly attending Bible study in search of meaning for his life and for this parents’ untimely death.

“It was a real turning point for me, and by the time I returned to Washington a week or so later, I was committed to a journey that would help me determine where I stood with God and my eternal destiny,” he wrote.
