Here are 5 new stores open now or coming to the Dayton area

Summer 2018 is bringing several new shopping options to the area amid a surge in retail sales after a winter of discontent.

The year started off with the spectre of "retail apocalypse" — more than 12,000 stores were expected to close this year according to a market analyst.

But then this week the National Retail Federation increased their sales growth to a minimum of 4.5 percent year-over-year. And Walmart announced the strongest growth in more than a decade in sales at established stores.

Consumers have more disposable income, and in this area they’re getting some new options on where to spend it. Here are a few recent examples:

1. Farmhouse Cottage Company

The former pop-up shop at The Greene Town Center opened its first permanent location this month, selling modern farmhouse décor.

2. Marc’s Grocery Store

Known for deep discounts, the grocery store chain opened its first Dayton-area location this month at 2100 E. Whipp Road in Kettering, formerly the site of a Kroger.

3. A.C. Moore Arts and Crafts

The art supply store is planned at the Cross Pointe Center at 251 E. Bell Road, in a spot that formerly housed a Home 2 Home.

4. The Room Place

The Chicago-based home furniture store is planning two area locations, one at the Dayton Mall and one at the Mall at Fairfield Commons.

5. Burlington Stores

The discount retailer formerly known as Burlington Coat Factory is opening a location at 5545 Executive Boulevard in the North Heights Plaza, a spot that formerly housed an HH Gregg.
