One of Butler County’s last remaining public pools opens for its final season

The pool will be replaced for 2019 with a new aquatic center to be built at Oxford Community Park.

The first day of the last season for the Oxford Municipal Pool at the TRI Complex started off with a splash.

The pool will be replaced for 2019 with a new aquatic center to be built at Oxford Community Park. Groundbreaking for that new facility is expected in August with opening planned for Memorial Day weekend next year.

Mayor Kate Rousmaniere officially opened the pool for its final season of use with a cannonball dive into the pool. It was the third year she opened the summer season with a jump into the pool.

There are still several special events scheduled this summer to mark the final year of use of the pool, which opened in the 1970s.

Here are a few:

  • Teen Night at the Pool: July 13 from 8:30 to 11 p.m. for students in grades six through 12. Music and games planned.
  • Back To School BBQ: Aug. 12 from 4 to 7 p.m. Grill out with the staff at the pool.
  • Summer's End 1970s Pool Party: Sept. 1 from 1 to 4 p.m. The final weekend of operation at the pool — ever — will feature a tribute to its opening in the '70s with music from the decade and admission and concessions just 75 cents.
  • Dog Day of Summer: Sept. 8 from 10 a.m. to noon. Dog owners are invited to bring their pooches to swim in the pool. Open to dogs over four months of age. Cost is $5 per dog, limited to two per owner. Proof of vaccinations will be required at check-in.

The new aquatic center moved forward at the May 15 meeting of City Council when unanimous approval was given to an ordinance authorizing the issuance of General Obligation Bond Anticipation Notes to finance the project.

The notes will have a maturity date of June 11, 2019, at which time the city will issue a General Obligation Bond for 20 years.

The notes will provide an amount not to exceed $4.825 million.
