In 2017, there were 14,481 OVI-related crashes in which 405 people were killed and 8,848 people were injured in Ohio, according to the state patrol.

“State Troopers have made 27,345 OVI arrests last year in an attempt to combat these dangerous drivers,” Lieutenant Clint Arnold, Commander of the Hamilton Post said. “OVI checkpoints are designed to not only deter impaired driving, but to proactively remove these dangerous drivers from our roadways.”

People often question why the police advertise these checkpoints. According to the Ohio State Bar Association police must publicize the checkpoints to satisfy Constitutional requirements for search and seizure.

“For a D.U.I. checkpoint to be legal, law enforcement must follow guidelines regarding such issues as the location, operation and publicity of the checkpoint,” according to a Q&A on the OSBA website.

Several people were arrested two weeks ago during an OVI checkpoint in Fairfield.
