VP Pence to be greeted in Columbus with “Big LBGTQ Dance Party” on Friday

On the eve of the Columbus Pride Parade, several hundred people are expected to protest Vice President Mike Pence by closing down Gay Street and holding a “Big LBGTQ Dance Party” outside a hotel where he is scheduled to speak Friday.

Yes, the event happens to be on Gay Street.

The three-hour event, starting at 2 p.m., is being organized by ProgressOhio, a liberal political group, and will feature a performance from drag queens, DJs and “Mike Hot-Pence,” a dancer who is a doppelganger for the vice president.

Vice President Pence is scheduled to make a swing through metro Detroit and Columbus on Friday. In Columbus he is expected to speak about the Trump tax cut package at an event hosted by America First Policies.

Pence is in Columbus to take part in a panel discussion on the recent tax cuts.

Local congressmen Rep. Mike Turner, R-Dayton, and Rep. Warren Davidson, R-Troy, are taking part in the event as is Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio.

ProgressOhio reports that 650 people say they’re planning to attend the party and another 2,000 say they’re interested. Event organizers got permission from the city of Columbus to close down the street.

As Indiana governor in 2015, Pence attracted national attention when he signed a religious freedom bill that LBGTQ advocates say would have worsened discrimination against them.

Over the years, Pence opposed same sex marriage, repealing the “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” policy in the military and expanding anti-discrimination laws to protect gays and lesbians.

Last year, the Columbus Pride Parade drew 12,000 marchers long the 1.2 mile route and an estimated 500,000 people participated in pride festivities.
