PHOTOS: Downtown Dayton’s first new hotel in decades opens soon, and here’s what you should know about it

There’s nothing like this product downtown, which is very popular for business travel and weekend getaways, Bob Hoying, principal with Crawford Hoying, one of the developers of Water Street.

“I think it’s special for Dayton because it’s the first one in a long time, and it’s location is special, given it’s proximity to the ballpark and everything else that is happening at Water Street,” he said.

The new Fairfield Inn & Suites opens on Thursday. Pre-sales opened over the summer months.

The six-story hotel has colorful art, furniture and decorations. Its amenities include a second-floor fitness center that overlooks downtown and a bar with limited service and an outdoor patio.

Rooms have flat-screen TVs and queen- or king-sized beds. Suites come with queen-sized pull-out couches.

There are also "workstations, plush bedding, microwaves and mini refrigerators and smart HDTVs featuring Netflix and Hulu," according to Marriott.

Construction on the 55,000-square-foot Fairfield Inn began in August 2017.

The project is another collaboration between Woodard Development and Dublin-based Crawford Hoying, which are the developers of Water Street.

This is the first hotel downtown since the Stouffer’s Dayton Plaza Hotel opened at 33 E. Fifth St. in 1976. The hotel later became the Crowne Plaza Dayton.

One big draw is the hotel’s location, because of the amenities in the northeastern part of downtown, developers say.

This includes Fifth Third Field (the home of Dayton Dragons baseball), RiverScape, restaurants in the Water Street District (Basil’s on Market, Lock 27 Brewing) and bars and food options nearby (Canal Street Arcade and Deli, Southern Belle).

The building also is not far from popular destinations like the Oregon District, the Century Bar, the Levitt Pavilion Dayton and the theaters and attractions along North Main Street.

The hotel’s bright and airy designs fit the Water Street District’s sense of newness and vibrancy, said Brent Crawford, principal with Crawford Hoying.
