Police: Hamilton man refuses commands, grabs gun from car’s glove box

A routine traffic stop led to a Hamilton man being charged with improper handling of a firearm and obstructing official business after he allegedly refused Middletown police commands and grabbed a gun in his vehicle.

Chaz Frazier, 31, also was charged with display of license plate and window tint, according to a police report.

On Wednesday night, while on patrol near Roosevelt Boulevard and Highland Street, police observed a car that had a tinted license plate cover, obstructing the view of the plate, they said.

Police said Frazier was driving the vehicle and Johnny Bolden was the passenger. Police smelled marijuana and Bolden had an active warrant for his arrest, police said. When asked, Frazier told police there was a gun in the glove box, then he retracted that statement.

When police told Frazier they were searching for a possible gun, he reached toward the glove box, the report read. Frazier was given “several verbal commands,” police said, but he opened the glove box and pulled out a firearm. He raised the gun in the air, then threw it back into the glove box, according to police.

Frazier was placed on the ground and handcuffed.

Police searched the vehicle and found a Smith and Wesson 9 mm firearm in the glove box and a Tupperware container full of marijuana under the front passenger seat. Throughout the traffic stop, police said, Frazier was uncooperative with officers.

Bolden was charged with a holder through Butler County Sheriff’s Office and issued a summons into Middletown Municipal Court for drug abuse/marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Frazier will have his arraignment Friday afternoon in Middletown Municipal Court, according to records.
