School won’t say why well-known CJ teacher, coach lost their licenses

EDITOR’S NOTE: This story is part of a Dayton Daily News investigation revealing that educators across Ohio are losing their professional licenses for misconduct at unprecedented numbers. The Daily News analyzed a database of thousands of educator misconduct files, and obtained records from schools, police departments, courts and the state, and reached out to ousted teachers and coaches. Some of the cases the newspaper found from districts across the Miami Valley have never previously been reported. Go here for the full report.

Two former Chaminade Julienne Catholic High School employees who lost their professional licenses since the beginning of last year include Ann Meyers -- a math teacher known for her famed sports career at the University of Dayton -- and long-time women’s golf coach George Menker.

Both Meyers and Menker declined to participate in an Ohio Department of Education investigation into allegations of misconduct and entered into consent agreements suspending their teaching and coaching licenses and prohibiting them from re-applying for one, according to ODE records.

But since they didn’t go through a formal hearing process with the state, ODE is under no obligation to make public the allegations against them.

In cases involving teachers at public school districts, the Dayton Daily News was able to obtain personnel files to determine why an educator had action taken against their license by the state. But private schools’ records aren’t public, and CJ would not disclose the reasons for their departure beyond a statement.

“We can confirm that these individuals have been employed in the past by Chaminade-Julienne. However, the status of their teaching or coaching license with the Ohio Department of Education made it impossible for them to continue to be employed by the school,” school spokeswoman Kary Ellen Berger said. “Current school policy does not allow for the release of any confidential personnel information.”

Meyers taught math and coached for CJ for decades. She graduated from the University of Dayton in 1980, where as a basketball player she was a three-time All-American who still holds school records. She was inducted into the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame in May 2017.

In July 2017, she entered into the consent agreement with ODE suspending her five-year high school teaching license that was set to expire in 2019 and permanently agreeing “that she will not reapply for any license, certificate, or permit with the Ohio Department of Education.”

Meyers did not return calls seeking comment.

Menker was a longtime golf coach at CJ whose pupil activity permit was suspended in January 2018, also with a prohibition against him ever re-applying.

Menker would only say of the allegations against him: “It was not criminal. It was not student-related.”

Menker said he helped build the school’s girls golf team to a championship team that sent several students to college on scholarships.

“What you ought to do is write about the 10 years of success I had down there,” he said.
