U.S. Supreme Court justices with Ohio ties as Trump nominee expected

Raymond Kethledge is considered by many as a finalist while Amul Thapar and Joan Larsen have also been reported to be under consideration.

A nominee confirmed by the Senate is seen as crucial to the future of the court’s balance and many pundits have said the next justice could have a significant influence for decades in issues ranging from abortion, immigration, privacy and business practices.

Several justices with Ohio ties have served on the Supreme Court. They include:

• John McLean, appointed by Jackson, 1830-1861;

• Noah Swayne, appointed by Lincoln, 1862-1881;

• Salmon P. Chase, chief justice appointed by Lincoln, serving 1864-1873;

• Morrison Waite, chief justice appointed by Grant, 1874-1888;

• Stanley Matthews, appointed by Garfield, 1881-1889;

• William Day, appointed by Theodore Roosevelt, 1903-1922;

• John Clarke, appointed by Wilson, 1916-1922;

• William Taft, appointed by Harding, 1921-1930;

• Potter Stewart, appointed by Eisenhower, 1958-1981.
