U.S. Supreme Court justices with Ohio ties as Trump nominee expected

President Trump is scheduled tonight to announce his U.S. Supreme Court nominee to replace the retiring Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy.

One reported finalist and two others said to be on Trump’s list of potential nominees are judges on the U.S. Court of Appeals 6th Circuit, based in Cincinnati.

Raymond Kethledge is considered by many as a finalist while Amul Thapar and Joan Larsen have also been reported to be under consideration.

A nominee confirmed by the Senate is seen as crucial to the future of the court’s balance and many pundits have said the next justice could have a significant influence for decades in issues ranging from abortion, immigration, privacy and business practices.

Several justices with Ohio ties have served on the Supreme Court. They include:

• John McLean, appointed by Jackson, 1830-1861;

• Noah Swayne, appointed by Lincoln, 1862-1881;

• Salmon P. Chase, chief justice appointed by Lincoln, serving 1864-1873;

• Morrison Waite, chief justice appointed by Grant, 1874-1888;

• Stanley Matthews, appointed by Garfield, 1881-1889;

• William Day, appointed by Theodore Roosevelt, 1903-1922;

• John Clarke, appointed by Wilson, 1916-1922;

• William Taft, appointed by Harding, 1921-1930;

• Potter Stewart, appointed by Eisenhower, 1958-1981.
