Tipp City man pleads to child sex charges

A Tipp City man accused of sexual conduct with a minor pleaded no contest Thursday to felony sexual battery and gross sexual imposition as part of a plea deal in Miami County Common Pleas Court.

John Maingi, 38, originally was indicted by a county grand jury on two felony counts of rape and two felony counts of gross imposition.

The indictment alleged the offenses occurred between August 2011 and December 2016. One rape count stated the alleged victim was younger than 10. The second rape count stated the alleged victim was younger than 13.

Under the plea deal, outlined in court by defense lawyer Kevin Lennen, prosecutors will recommend a three-year mandatory prison term. Maingi could receive up to 10 years in prison.

Judge Christopher Gee found him guilty, ordered a pre-sentence investigation and scheduled sentencing for Dec. 10.

Gee also notified Maingi he would be classified at sentencing as a Tier III sex offender.

The designation will require him to, once released from prison, register his address with the sheriff's office where he lives every 90 days for the rest of his life.

Maingi remains in the county jail on $400,000 bail.
