Traffic snarled at West Chester Twp. event

Saturday’s opening of the USA Triathlon Youth and Junior National Championship at Voice of America Park featuring young triathletes from across the country has caused traffic problems in West Chester Twp.

The Journal-News announced road closures including parts of Cox Road and Liberty Way that will be closed today and Sunday, Aug. 5-6, to accommodate the event. Road closures will be in effect from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. both days.

But motorists were blocking intersections and were confused by the many traffic cones and intersections that were not open.

West Chester police reported no accidents or pedestrian injuries, but are reminding motorists to pay attention to detours and be patient while traffic is moving at a slow pace or being redirected.

Here’s how drivers can navigate the area this weekend:

•Cox Road will be closed between Liberty Way and the primary entrance of the VOA Retail Center

•Liberty Way will be closed between Cox Road and Butler-Warren Road

•Access will be maintained to all local businesses from Tylersville Road, but drivers should expect delays in the area

•Those visiting Cox Road businesses, including the VOA Retail Center, must access the businesses from Tylersville Road during the closures

•Businesses on Service Center Drive will be accessible from Liberty Way only

Here’s how Voice of America MetroPark guests can access the park this weekend:

•Access to Voice of America MetroPark will be restricted to the Butler Warren Road gate from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. Normal access to the park will resume during the evening hours.

•The public will not have access to the Voice of America Lake walking path, the Butler-Warren Road walking path, or water activities on the lake while the athletes practice and compete from 6 a.m. and 3 p.m.

•The playground area at Voice of America MetroPark will be accessible by parking at the south end of the park near the Athletic Complex and walking

•Use of Wiggly Field and walking elsewhere in the park, on marked trails, is permitted
