5 crazy overturned truck accidents in Ohio

Almost anything can disrupt the flow of traffic on the highway and create travel slowdowns.

A large truck, like a semi or tractor, overturning on the highway can bring traffic to a complete stop.

Not only is there the issue of getting the large vehicle upright again and the cleaning up the debris after an accident, but the truck could be in the middle of a haul.

According to Mental Floss, some of the strangest things that have been spilled on a highway and delayed traffic include 40,000 pounds of sausage, a 56-foot whale, $2 million in coins, 40,000 pounds of ice cream, and 35,000 pounds of explosive.

This morning a dump truck overturned on U.S. 35 in Beavercreek and slowed traffic for over five hours.

The outcome wasn’t too bad for motorists but our area has seen some more interesting accidents involving overturned truck.

Here are five notable instances in the past year, including today’s incident.

Tractor-trailer on U.S. 35

A tractor-trailer tipped and crashed on June 9, 2015 carrying 2,200 pigs.

The accident happened on U.S. 35 near Xenia.

Unfortunately, about 1,100 piglets died in the accident while an estimated 1,100 were collected and trucked to Indiana.

U.S. 35 remained closed after the accident for eight hours.

The driver of the crash was later found guilty in Xenia Municipal Court for not maintaining reasonable control.

Paint truck on Research Boulevard, Beavercreek

The Environmental Protection Agency was called to a scene in Beavercreek where a paint truck turned over, closing Research Blvd. and Grange Hall last June.

This truck was moving yellow and white paint that would have been used to line roadways, according to officials.

The truck was owned by A&A Safety of Dayton/Cincinnati/Cleveland.

Crews worked for hours to clean up the spill.

Semi on I-675

On Aug. 12 last year, a truck overturned and shut down both directions of I-675 at the I-70 interchange.

The truck, that was carrying and had spilled grain, laid on its side for hours.

The driver was trapped for a brief time before he was extricated and flown to Miami Valley Hospital.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident.

Dump truck on U.S. 35

At 9:25 a.m., Monday morning, Beavercreek police responded to an accident involving an overturned dump truck.

The dump truck was reported on its side and blocking the right lane on U.S. 35 West between North Fairfield Road and I-675.

Luckily, there were no reports of injury but the traffic along the road could be slowed until the truck can be put back on its wheels.

Semi tandem-trailer near Cedarville

Last May, a semi pulling two trailers carrying general merchandise turned over in the 2000 block of State Route 72 South.

Preliminary investigation suggest that the rear trailer tandem went off the berm, which pulled the rest of the vehicle off the road.

The driver walked away with no injury.

Jim Slusher, Ohio Highway Patrol Xenia Post, said that he has no doubt that the seat belt saved the driver’s life.
