Union approves new labor agreement at AK Steel Middletown facility

AK Steel said today that members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) Local 1943 have ratified a two-year labor agreement covering about 1,730 hourly employees at the company’s Middletown, Ohio facility.

AK Steel said that the contract was ratified in voting held on Monday. The new agreement will be effective until March 15, 2020.

The union said that 967 of its members voted to approve the agreement and 293 voted against it.

“We would like to thank the 1,260 members that came out to vote as well as the volunteers that helped with the election,” the union said via its website.

Middletown Works is an integrated steel operation with carbon steel melting, casting, hot and cold rolling, and finishing operations to produce a number of carbon and stainless steels for the automotive and other industries.

“We are pleased to have reached an agreement at Middletown Works ahead of the expiration date,” AK Steel CEO Roger Newport said. “The new agreement provides a competitive labor contract that advances the interests of our employees and the company.”

AK Steel is Butler County’s third-largest employer with a total of approximately 2,400 full-time employees at its Middletown Works and corporate headquarters. It employs 9,200 people at manufacturing operations across seven states, as well as in Canada and Mexico.
