Almost a quarter of the state’s 100 most dangerous intersections are in the Miami Valley, according to one analysis of state crash statistics. During a two-year span, crashes at the 22 trouble spots resulted in 509 injuries.
Eleven of the worst 100 intersections are located in Montgomery County, home to just 4.6 percent of the state’s population. The worst area intersection on the list is Airway Road and Woodman Drive in Riverside, where 36 people were injured in 44 separate crashes from 2013-2015.
The study by The Brannon Law Firm examined Department of Public Safety data from the period and gave each intersection a “danger score” based on the number of crashes, injuries and fatalities.
Local police agencies also draw attention to many of the same intersections and those cities are looking at new measures like roundabouts to improve safety.
A 2019 completion is expected for a roundabout at Kauffman Avenue and Colonel Glenn Highway, one of Fairborn’s most dangerous intersections. A traffic circle is also being considered for a perpetually-congested intersection at Alex Bell and Mad River roads in Centerville.
Dayton plans to renew a controversial traffic enforcement camera program despite the higher costs of more stringent requirements and an uncertain Ohio Supreme Court decision in a case filed against the state.
