Chief Master Sgt. Keith Erb Jr., United States Air Force Band of Flight chief enlisted advisor, provided the commencement address.
Chief Master Sgt. Paula Eischen, 88th Air Base Wing interim command chief, addressed the graduates before helping hand out diplomas.
“What you acheived is deserving of ‘ceremony and fuss,’” said Eischen.
She was referencing the graduation march that played while the CCAF graduates marched in.
Originally entitled “Land of Hope and Glory,” the march was first played at the Yale graduation ceremony in 1905. It was meant to bring pomp and circumstance, which is defined as splendid celebration with ceremony and fuss, explained Eischen.
“And that’s what we’re doing here today. We’re providing you ceremony and fuss,” she added.
“When our Airmen achieve higher education, the Air Force benefits. When you’re stronger Airmen our mission is stronger. Our enlisted force is the envy of many nations because we build professional Airmen, such as the ones you’ll see coming across the stage today,” said Eischen.
“I want to thank you for your dedication to education. When you get educated you bring that back to our force and make our mission stronger,” she said.
Erb, who has two CCAF degrees, offered two main points for the graduates during his commencement address.
“First take stock and consider where you’re going, and secondly make sure when you’re setting goals they match up with your values and not someone else’s,” he said.
McDonald officially conferred the degree of Associate of Applied Science to the graduates after presenting them with their diplomas.
“This isn’t just a college graduation … this is different. In addition to your families, commanders, supervisors and co-workers attending, the Honor Guard and Air Force Band of Flight participating makes it extra special. I’m continually amazed at the excellence of our Airmen and for those recognized today. Not only are you accomplishing amazing things on a day-to-day basis, for you to take the time to get your CCAF degree and make yourselves and our Air Force better is fantastic – my hat is off to you,” said McDonald.
He then explained his views on the importance of education.
“As the son of a career high school teacher, I learned at a young age the value of learning and came to understand that education is something that can never be taken away from you,’ he said.
“I challenge you, as I challenge myself, to be lifelong learners. Earning your CCAF degree is a great step in that direction.”
The Community College of the Air Force is the largest multi-campus community college in the world. It was established in 1971 by Gen. John D. Ryan, then Air Force Chief of Staff, with the goal of enhancing the skills of noncommissioned officers as technicians, leaders and citizens, and to develop them as managers of Air Force resources.
Its affiliated schools are located in 37 states, the District of Columbia and in nine foreign locations, and offers 71 degree programs. To date, the college has awarded 505,000 associate in applied science degrees.
