Wright-Patt to take part in wounded warrior softball exhibitions

The Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team will play two exhibition games Oct. 13 at Ron Nischwitz Baseball Stadium at Wright State University.

Game 1 starts at 9 a.m. and will pit WWAST against military and first responder all-stars from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Game 2 starts at 2 p.m. and will set WWAST against all-stars from the Dayton Legends Softball Club.

Between games, Miami Valley veteran service organizations are invited to be recognized and honored in a WWAST “Salute to Gold Star Families” ceremony on the field. This year’s ceremonies look to be very special, as longtime Cincinnati Reds radio broadcaster, Joe Nuxhall’s famous signoff – “rounding third and heading for home” is replicated. At each base, beneficiaries will recognize members of Gold Star Families for their ultimate sacrifice.

The day’s events are fundraisers for the two Fisher Houses at Wright-Patterson AFB, the new Fisher House being built on the grounds of the Dayton Veterans Administration Medical Center and Honor Flight Dayton, which escorts U.S. military veterans on a free visit to their memorials in Washington, D.C. Combat Outpost Robinson and the WWAST Kids’ Camp also will benefit.

The event is being hosted by Morgan Stanley, Hanger Clinic and Wright State University Veteran and Military Center.

Cost for tickets is a $5 donation; they may be obtained in person via Parrot Promotions inside Hot Spring Spa of Dayton, 6100 Wilmington Pike or by emailing Scott Kuhnen at scott.kuhnen@usssa.com.
