Area athletes will go to 79 colleges next year. Here’s what you should know about them.

Area high school seniors will spread to at least 79 colleges after this year in states that range from Texas to Oklahoma to New York to South Carolina.

That’s according to a list compiled by the Dayton Daily News from reports from area high schools about their committed seniors. Many of them will sign their national letters of intent on Wednesday, Feb. 1, a date when athletes in certain sports will sign.

Here’s where the area will be represented by the current seniors next year (click on a marker for a list of area athletes going to that school):

Here are some numbers you should know about this athlete group:

» 30: Number of area athletes committing to play baseball in college. That includes seven baseball players from Lakota West.

» 6: Athletes that will be attending Ohio University, the highest for any college. They'll be playing baseball, boys golf, girls basketball, girls golf and girls track and field.

» 3: High schools that will send double digits in athletes to colleges: Lakota West (14), Springboro (12) and Centerville (10).

» 12 (at least): Number of area football players who have committed to play in college.
