Second Thoughts: Reds should make Scooter face of the franchise

Cincinnati Reds add another pitcher

The Cincinnati Reds made a minor move Tuesday, signing relief pitcher David Hernandez to a two-year contract.

A 32-year-old from California, Hernandez pitched in 64 major-league games last season, splitting time with the Diamondbacks and Angels.

MLB.com reports he will make $2.5 million per year with performance-based incentives available.

“It was a long offseason,” he said on a conference call with local media. “It started to get a little frustrating. You kind of think you’re going to have to go the route you went the previous year (when he started in Triple-A), (but) I just waited and waited and waited some more. I connected with Cincinnati and it all came together quickly.”

He has a career ERA of 4.00 in 443 major-league appearances with 22 career saves.

Hernandez made his major-league debut for Baltimore in 2009.
