Alabama DB Minkah Fitzpatrick wins Bednarik Award as top defensive player

The awards are rolling in for Alabama defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick as he has now been named the winner of the Chuck Bednarik Award, given annually to the nation’s top defensive player.

Fitzpatrick, who earlier on Thursday was given the Jim Thorpe Award as the nation’s top defensive back, has been a mainstay in the Crimson Tide’s defensive backfield the last three seasons. In 2017, Fitzpatrick made 52 total tackles, six tackles for a loss and intercepted one pass while most quarterbacks refused to throw his way.

From Old Bridge, N.J., Fitzpatrick also had 1.5 sacks and broke up seven passes as the leader of an Alabama defense that finished No. 1 in scoring defense and No. 2 in total defense.

This is the second straight year an Alabama player has taken home the award, as Jonathan Allen was the recipient last season.
