Alabama DB Minkah Fitzpatrick wins Jim Thorpe Award

Alabama defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick was incredible for the Crimson Tide this season, and now he’s being recognized for it.

Fitzpatrick was named the recipient of the 2017 Jim Thorpe Award Thursday night, given to the nation’s top defensive back. He won the award over Texas’ DeShon Elliott and Iowa’s Josh Jackson.

He’s the first Alabama player to win this award since Antonio Langham took it home in 1993.

Fitzpatrick played every position in the secondary at one point or another this season for Alabama, and he excelled at every one of them. He finished the season with 33 tackles, six tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, an interception and six deflections.

He’s the leader of the Alabama defense, which will take on Clemson in the Sugar Bowl on New Year’s Day.
