Maryland-Stony Brook basketball preview

In its last exhibition, Maryland secured an 88-44 win against Randolph-Macon College on Nov. 2. The Terps sophomore — guards Anthony Cowan and Kevin Huerter and forward Justin Jackson — all scored in double figures.  Freshman Darryl Morsell finished with 14 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists.

In the front court, center Michal Cekovsky played 17 minutes in one of his first games since fracturing his ankle in February. Another big man, 6-foot-10 freshman Bruno Fernando, missed the exhibition with an injury. A four-star prospect out of IMG Academy MG, Fernando missed two weeks of preseason practice with a left ankle sprain.

He’s since recovered, and coach Mark Turgeon said he will be ready to go Friday night.

“I think it affects Bruno the most, because he missed a little over two weeks of practice, and this time of year that’s very important. And so he’s a little bit behind,” Turgeon said to Roman Stubbs of The Washington Post.. “I think the ankle injury changes some things. He was really playing at a high level and was very comfortable. And I think that changed some things. . . . He does have a big upside; he does some things nobody else can do on our team. I coach by feel, so I will coach him by feel. If I think he’s ready to handle more, we’ll give him more.”

Stony Brook is coming off its first-ever NCAA tournament appearance after going 26-6. The Seawolves earned the No. 13 seed in the Big Dance and lost to Kentucky, 85-57, in the first round.

Hartman: Firing Bryan Price shows winning might actually matter to Cincinnati Reds

Turns out losing games actually does have consequences in Cincinnati.  That’s reassuring, I guess.  The Cincinnati Reds firing Bryan Price might not make them better, but at least he will no longer be able to make them worse.  I wanted Price to work out as the team’s manager, and I don’t want to celebrate anyone losing...

Ohio State football 2-back set could be explosive in 2018

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Last season, Ohio State fans got the smallest possible taste of what could come from pairing J.K. Dobbins and Mike Webber in the backfield together. In 2018, with Weber healthy and Dobbins much more of a known commodity, a two-back set could be a much more common occurrence. Speculation of such a formation began...

There’s a lot Cam Taylor is looking forward to this weekend at the Nebraska spring game. The 2018 signee will have his parents, his sister and a high school teammate traveling with him to Lincoln from his home in Montgomery, Ala. He’ll have a chance to link up with several other 2018 signees, some of whom he will...

The Cincinnati Reds, who are off to their worst start through 18 games since 1931, fired manager Bryan Price and pitching coach Mack Jenkins on Thursday. “At this time, we felt a change needed to happen in order to begin the process of getting this team back on the right track,” said President of Baseball Operations and General Manager...
