UD’s NCAA tournament run continues: 29 appearances in 10 years

There's no other way to put it: The University of Dayton team sports are on an NCAA tournament roll (Jump to search tournament history).

The Flyers' women's basketball team on Sunday secured its seventh NCAA tournament appearance with an Atlantic 10 Conference tournament title. The men's team is all but a lock for a tournament bid as well, and those come after the women's soccer and volleyball teams played in fall NCAA tournaments.

UD teams have played in a combined 29 NCAA tournaments in the past decade in baseball, men’s basketball, men’s soccer, football, women’s basketball, women’s soccer, volleyball.

Here are three things to know about that tournament roll.

The first came in 1952. That's the first year the men's basketball team played in the tournament, losing to Illinois in a regional semifinal.

The football team played in 11 Division III tournaments. Those came from 1978-92 when the program played in D-III. The Flyers won two national championships, in 1980 and '89. Their success was a major reason the NCAA passed a rule that schools must compete in the same division in all sports (except men's ice hockey). The football team also played in the 2015 D-I Football Championship Subdivision tournament.

4 sports have double-digit appearances. Those are men's basketball (17), football (12), women's volleyball (12) and women's soccer (10).
