Cunningham scores 25 to lead Dayton to rout of Richmond in A-10 opener

Dayton wins its fourth straight game

Josh Cunningham scored 25 points on 11-of-14 shooting to lead the Dayton Flyers to a 72-48 victory against Richmond in the Atlantic 10 Conference opener for both teams Sunday at UD Arena.

Obi Toppin scored 16 points. Ryan Mikesell and Trey Landers each scored nine points. Jalen Crutcher added eight points.

Dayton shot 53.4 percent from the field but only 15 percent from 3-point range (3-20). Richmond shot 28.9 percent from the field.

Dayton improved to 9-5 and matches its season-best four-game winning streak. The Flyers return to action at 7 p.m. Wednesday at George Washington.

HALFTIME RECAP

Cunningham scored 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting to lead Dayton to a 29-18 halftime.

Dayton shot 52 percent from the field and held Richmond to 23.1 percent shooting.

Cunningham reached the 1,000-point career mark in the first half. Ryan Mikesell added five points for Dayton. Trey Landers and Obi Toppin each scored four. Toppin had two dunks.

Dayton led by as many as 15 points. Jacob Gilyard led Richmond with 9 points.

At halftime, Dayton honored the family of late center Steve McElvene, whose tissue donation after his death in 2016 helped heal 75 people. UD announced its annual best defender award will be named after McElvene.
