Dec. 31 in Bengals history

Tbe Cincinnati Bengals have played two times on Dec. 31, and they are 1-1 in those contests.

Here is a look at each game:

Dec. 31, 1988 – Cincinnati Bengals 21, Seattle Seahawks 13 at Riverfront Stadium

Stanley Wilson ran for two touchdowns, and Ickey Woods scored one as the Bengals raced out to a 21-0 halftime lead in a divisional playoff game. Woods finished with 126 yards to lead a Bengals rushing attack that rolled up 256 yards, which at the time were the 10th most in a playoff game in the Super Bowl era. The game is best remembered, however, for Seattle nose tackle Josh Nash repeatedly faking injury in an attempt to slow down Cincinnati’s no-huddle offense. The Sehawks appeared to get within one score on a Dave Krieg 1-yard touchdown run with 6:05 to go, but kicker Norm Johnson missed the extra point to keep the deficit at eight, and the Bengals defense held from there.

Dec. 31, 2006 – Pittsburgh Steelers 23, Cincinnati Bengals 17 (OT) at Paul Brown Stadium

The Bengals went into the game with a chance to make the playoffs, but the Steelers ended their season three plays into overtime when Santonio Holmes took a short pass from Ben Roethlisberger and ran 67 yards to the end zone for the game-winning score. The Bengals had a chance to win the game at the end of regulation, but kicker Shayne Graham missed a 39-yard field goal with eight seconds remaining. Had the Bengals won, they would have made the playoffs as the result they needed later in the day occurred when San Francisco upset Denver 26-23 in overtime.
