Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray wins the award

UPDATE, 9:05 p.m.

Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins came up short in his bid for the Heisman Trophy on Saturday at the Downtown Athletic Club in New York City.

Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray won the award. Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was runner-up in the voting, followed by Haskins.

Haskins has thrown for 4,580 yards and 47 touchdowns, both Big Ten single-season records, and was named the Big Ten’s quarterback and offensive player of the year as well as the league’s most valuable player.

Haskins and the Buckeyes return to the field on Jan. 1, 2019, in the Rose Bowl against Washington.

INITIAL REPORT

Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins is among three players still in the running for one of the most-iconic trophies in sports.

The Downtown Athletic Cub announced Monday night Haskins is a finalist for the Heisman Trophy along with fellow quarterbacks Kyler Murray of Oklahoma and Tua Tagovailoa of Alabama.

They have been invited to the annual awards presentation ceremony in New York City on Saturday night.

Haskins eclipsed the 400-yard mark for the fifth time this season last week when he threw for a school-record 499 yards as the Buckeyes beat Northwestern 45-24 in the Big Ten championship game. He also tossed five touchdown passes a week after throwing for six scores in a stunning 62-39 rout of Michigan

Haskins has thrown for 4,580 yards and 47 touchdowns, both Big Ten single-season records, this year and was named the Big Ten’s quarterback and offensive player of the year as well as the league’s most valuable player.

Tagovailoa has been considered the front-runner for the Heisman since early in the season, but Murray and Haskins made strong last impressions on championship Saturday.

Murray threw for 304 yards and four touchdowns while running for 92 yards and another score as the Sooners beat Texas in the Big 12 title game.

Tagovailoa was unable to finish the SEC championship game because of a leg injury, but Jalen Hurts led the Crimson Tide to a come-from-behind 35-28 victory over Georgia.

The winner of the Heisman Trophy will be announced at the end of the presentation show on ESPN on Saturday night. That is set to begin at 8 p.m.
