High School Basketball: Who made boys all-area teams?

Darius Quisenberry (Wayne), Myles Belyeu (Trotwood-Madison), Justin Ahrens (Versailles) and Tyler Mescher (Marion Local) are the players of the year in their respective divisions for the All-Area boys high school basketball teams.

Joining them as coaches of the year are Nathan Martindale (Wayne), Rocky Rockhold (Trotwood), Brett Kopp (Bethel) and Kurt Goettemoeller (Marion Local).

A 6-foot-1 senior guard, Quisenberry is the top player in Division I. He averaged team highs of 18.5 points and 6.5 assists. Wayne (25-2) won a Greater Western Ohio Conference National East divisional title (11-1) and lost to Cincinnati Moeller in a regional final.

Quisenberry signed with Youngstown State University.

Belyeu, a 6-4 senior, is the D-II player of the year. He was second in GWOC scoring (25.2) and led the Rams in rebounding (7.1). A three-year starter, he was a key reason why Trotwood (26-4) won a GWOC American South title (14-0) and advanced to a D-II state final four for the second straight season.

Trotwood was defeated by two-time state champ Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary in the state championship. Belyeu is uncommitted.

Ahrens, a 6-6 senior, is the D-III player of the year. A four-year starter, he reset many single-season and career scoring records at Versailles and in the Midwest Athletic Conference, and led the Tigers (21-5) to a district final. He signed with Ohio State.

Mescher, a 6-2 senior and robust force in the middle, led Marion Local (25-4) to a D-IV state championship with a double-overtime defeat of Willoughby Cornerstone Christian in the state final. He averaged a team-high 16.4 points and was also a tight end/defensive end standout on the Flyers’ D-VI state football champions.

Martindale is the D-I coach of the year. Previously a Warriors assistant, he was promoted to succeed Travis Trice, who took over Wayne’s girls program. It was Martindale’s first season as a varsity head coach.

Rockhold has molded Trotwood into an area and state D-II power. The high-scoring Rams are a combined 75-9 over the last three seasons and have advanced to a state final four in three of the last five years. Trotwood averaged 89.3 points this season and hit triple figures nine times in the regular season.

Kopp guided Bethel (19-6) to its second straight unbeaten Cross County Conference title (12-0) and is the D-III coach of the year. Bethel also played for a district championship.

Goettemoeller is the D-IV coach of the year. The Flyers won an outright MAC title (9-0) and 20 of their last 21 games to capture their third boys basketball state title.
